STEVEN Redgrave is a fine role model for young and old alike and should be projected as such.

He was not born into wealth and in life was not destined for academic achievement.

Well guided, his physical ability and his skill as a team man was encouraged.

His own determination for success by hard work was developed.

His achievements will always rank high in the world of sport and it is right that in Marlow we should have something a little more special for him.

If we have a statue, then, like the one on the Causeway and the new Millennium Maze, it will be vandalised.

Of itself it will do nothing to project the man as a role model for young people or show them what can be achieved from a modest start in life by building on their qualities.

This could be done by creating a permanent tribute to Steven Redgrave in a room. A bronze statuette could form the centrepiece with a display of really good quality graphics, presentation, explanation and video to tell the whole story of his life, the struggles and the steps in the achievement of this remarkable man in a way that would capture the imagination of generations of Marlovians and visitors to the town.

The Peacock room at Court Gardens would make an excellent site.

Perhaps people prefer a large statue gazing up the river but I have not met any, but then I have not met any that preferred a maze!
