BUCKINGHAMSHIRE County Council has hit back at the Government's decision to stop funding for disinfecting farms in light of the foot and mouth virus.

The Government announced the suspension of expenditure on final cleansing and disinfecting farm premises.

Margaret Dewar, cabinet member responsible for the county countryside, said: "This will be a serious blow to those farmers less fortunate than ours who have already suffered terrific loss from the disease and who are struggling to get back on their feet.

"Fortunately the suspension will not affect any of our farmers as we have not had an outbreak in the county."

The money, which has been provided by the Government throughout the foot and mouth crisis, has been used to pay for the cleaning and disinfection of farms where the disease has been confirmed.

This work must be carried out before the farmers are allowed to restock.

Councillor Dewar added: "The disease control measures required by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for the tipping of ash from foot and mouth pyres in the North of England at Calvert will not be affected.

"We will ensure public and animal health remains a priority for the county without any unnecessary financial burden being placed on Bucks residents."
