IF YOU bump into a member of Penn Street Cricket Club he will proudly tell you that they have won the District Cup four times.

But then if you examine the trophy it will tell you that they have only won it twice so who is fibbing?

Well the answer is, it's the cup that is lying.

Penn Street did win the cup four times but their name only appears on the trophy twice because they refused to pay to have it engraved when the league inserted a rule saying that the winners must pay to have their name inscribed on the trophy.

But Penn's four triumphs will be celebrated properly when the club holds its centenary ball in June.

That story, along with the time when Pip Slade became the only batsman in the club's history to whack a boundary over the Squirrel Pub, will all be relayed as the club looks forward to its centenary season.

The club, which fields adult and junior sides, has arranged a number of events to celebrate their centenary season.

They will hold a centenary ball on June 23 before staging a charity match against an MCC XI the next day.

A Presidents Centenary match is also planned and the team will also take on the village in a match where the players will turn the clock back 100 years by wearing clothes from yesteryear.

The club, which raises around £12,000 each year for charities is now on the lookout for sponsors to help them make their 100th year a big success.
