WYCOMBE District Council says it regrets the fact that people living in a new housing development in High Wycombe were not registered to vote at their new addresses.

It said the electors should have been on the electoral roll at their previous homes.

But Sally Baker 24, who lives at in Vanguard Close, said she had checked and she was not registered to vote anywhere.

She said: "There are 45 houses in this road and with about two people in each house, that's 90 people who couldn't vote,"

Electoral registration forms go out each October for people to fill in.

"I could understand if one or two forms had gone missing, but not the whole lot," said Mrs Baker.

A council spokesman said the mix up at Vanguard Close was regrettable.

A canvasser went round to the homes and reported that they were not occupied.

He said: "It appears that some of the properties were occupied but we only found that out very recently."

He said people not on the electoral register could not vote.

Mrs Baker added: "The council was quick enough to sort our council tax out."

Another young woman, Stephanie Lambley, from Downley, also found she could not vote when she rang the council on Wednesday to find out why she had not received a poll card.

She was told she had not returned the electoral registration form, though she told the Free Press that she had.

She was not registered at her previous address, either.

A district council spokesman said when the canvasser went round to see why she had not returned her form, she had refused to sign the new one.

But Miss Lambley said that she wanted to vote and would never have refused.
