VETERANS, families and residents turned up in large numbers to commemorate ex-servicemen conscripted to the armed forces.

Members of the Princes Risborough and District Royal British Legion gathered with Wycombe District Council for the event in honour of all servicemen that served between 1945 and 1963.

Horace Barrett, chairman of the Princes Risborough branch, said about 130 people attended the march and church service in Princes Risborough on Sunday afternoon.

He said: "It was a marvellous day. It went down very well."

The event began with a parade from the Legion in Bell Street to St Mary's Church, Church Street, for a service.

They then marched back to the library, on the corner of Bell Street and High Street, to lay wreaths at a memorial stone, before parading back to the British Legion, with Deputy Lieutenant for Buckinghamshire Greg Smith taking the salute.

Mr Barrett said it was good to see Beaver Scouts as wreath bearers.

He said: "I think it was a good idea. When they see that stone, they'll be able to say I was there when they blessed the stone."

Alan Tizzard, national chairman for the National Service Veterans Alliance, thanked everyone in Bucks who had paid tribute to ex-servicemen

He said: "I'm in awe of the amount of interest that has been shown."
