A TEMPORARY footbridge will be constructed in the next couple of weeks for furious residents who said they would refuse to pay their council tax.

Glory Mill Lane, in Wooburn Green, was thrown into chaos last November when the road collapsed into the river and was not expected to be repaired until later this year.

Bucks County Council then closed the footpath across the bridge on February 5 on safety grounds after the council's engineers found a number of structural defects on the bridge.

Hilda Evans, of Holtspur Avenue, Wooburn Green, said: "They won't be getting any more council tax unless something is done quickly.

"When I finish work I have to get off at The Green, walk all the way up Wooburn Green Lane and all the way along to the the other end of Holtspur Avenue.

"That's about another half mile or so. There isn't even a sign up warning you."

Many residents who live in the area surrounding Glory Mill Lane, rely on the road to walk to the school and to the local newsagents without having to go all the way to The Green and around.

"These people seem to forget who is paying their wages," said 76-year-old Reginald Lenharth, of Glory Close, Wooburn Green.

He added: "People are having to walk way out of their way to get to places that are just down the road."

A spokesman from the county council said: "We are negotiating to put up a footbridge as a temporary measure within the next week or two."
