Re Police told to fine more motorists

IT may be controversial and it may be getting the headlines for the wrong reasons but, police should fine both speeders and people who don't wear their seat belts, especially if children are involved.

Seventy children were fatally injured in 1999 and a staggering 15,123 were injured.

Another major statistic is that back-seat passengers are three times more likely to die in an accident if they are not belted up.

As the technical director in a seat belt company, I see the figures and I do the tests. In an accident at just 30mph a ten stone adolescent can effectively "weigh" around the same as a full-grown elephant!

If they aren't wearing a seat belt they won't be restrained and they are a danger to themselves and a danger to others.

If fining people stops them and their children from being injured (potentially fatally), then I, for one, am all for it!
