A CLUB that is celebrating its 40th birthday is one step closer to building a new headquarters after receiving a cash boost of £5,000.

The 61 Youth Club, set up in 1961 and based in Barn Meadow, Old Amersham, is currently trying to raise £300,000 to build a new building, as their existing club is a temporary structure.

The club has to keep on mending the roof to keep it safe.

They were given the donation by The Amersham Rotary Club, who organised an evening of music on Saturday night at St Mary's Parish Church, Old Amersham.

Youth worker Denise Haynes said although the building was only supposed to last 25 years, they have been there for 30.

She said: "We have a long way to go, we have raised about £22,000. But we are doing well and we have to look positive.

"I was told it was brilliant music and it was a lovely evening."

The Amersham Band, The Beaconsfield School Junior Choir and Jillian Arthur, a soprano, were all part of the performance.

Peter Mead, who has been a member of the Amersham Rotary Club since 1973, supported the fundraising venture.

He said: "We packed 365 people in St Mary's Church to watch the performance and they thought it was fantastic.

"We were quite overwhelmed that it was so successful. We will certainly be raising money for them again."

The next fundraising venture the youth club has organised is a golf afternoon.

The tickets cost £45 a person which includes a light lunch, 18 holes and a three course evening meal. The golf will take place at the Western Turville Golf Club on June 15.
