The newly created top grade for nurses was given to Alyson Smith, currently senior nurse in public health at Buckinghamshire Health Authority and she began her new role on April 1.

The new posts were created by the secretary of state for health, Alan Milburn, to keep experienced NHS staff in the service by offering career opportunities in practical nursing.

She will be using her expertise to advise the community, healthcare workers and partners in the area of health protection.

Mrs Smith said: "I will bring my experience and leadership skills together to develop this new role.

"I look forward to the challenge of making a significant contribution to health protection services in Buckinghamshire."

Director of public health Robert Sheriff, said: "This is an opportunity to draw on professional experience and expertise to improve the quality of healthcare and break down barriers between clinical professionals."
