BOWLERS from a blind club have raised more than £700 for a new minibus.

The Chestnuts Blind Bowling Club were devastated when the Thames Valley Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied Club bus was burnt to a crisp last year by vandals.

Reg Harmsworth, chairman and captain of the bowling club, said: "We used to hire the bus until someone thought it would be fun to burn it. We now have to rely on sighted car drivers to get us to Handy Cross.

"Most of these lovely people already help us on the green, we cannot bowl without sighted helpers."

The bowlers raised £720 by getting friends, family and individuals to sponsor them to bowl within a yard of the jack. Each time it was a achieved it would equal a point.

"Some members kept doing it week after week," explained Reg. "That's how we raised so much and I had a spare set of bowls which I sold and put the money in the kitty."
