VICTIMS of the earthquake in El Salvador have been given urgently needed clean drinking water thanks to Bourne End and Cookham Rotaract Club.

The club has provided more than 100,000 litres of clean water in four AQUABOXES, to stricken families in the central American country. This represents 5,000 cups of water, enough for a group of four to have ten cups a day for four months.

The boxes, which are capable of providing 33,000 litres of purified water, are being used by relief agencies to stem the tide of disease that occurs after major disasters.

Most of El Salvador has been hit by three earthquakes this year. More than 1,000 people have died and 1.3 million made homeless.

Rebecca Hazell, from the Rotaract Club said: "When you see major disasters in places such as El Salvador and India you tend to feel rather helpless.

"By using £1,000 of our fundraising money to pay for the AQUABOXES, we can provide almost instant relief to the area that need it most."

The AQUABOX project was the brainchild of a Rotary Club in Derbyshire, but the Bourne End and Cookham Rotaract, which is a branch of Rotary, decided to take it on board.
