A BUS company will withdraw a controversial service after it failed to attract enough customers.

Abbey Coaches will discontinue running buses from Beaconsfield to Holtspur, although the service will continue from Holtspur to High Wycombe.

The move will please a number of residents on Wattleton Road, Beaconsfield, who have complained to the town council about the route which they claim causes chaos in the residential street.

Abbey Coaches says its decision has nothing to do with these complaints, but was based on levels of use.

David Renshaw, of Wattleton Road, Beaconsfield, said the route meant that one Number One bus every hour was driving down the street. It has three schools along it with heavy traffic from the Butler's Court development.

He added: "It is not that we do not welcome a new bus route but we cannot understand why they diverted the bus from the A40 and put it on a residential road. There are not even any bus stops on the road.

"It just goes straight through and does not even stop for us."

Town councillor Archie Legg (Ind, South Ward) said he had heard complaints on the matter and added: "The people of Wattleton Road do not want this bus route and objections have been registered with the county council."

Steve Burns, of Abbey Coaches, said: "We've had a couple of complaints from people in Wattleton Road who said buses are wonderful but they don't want them running outside their house.

"The intention wasn't to antagonise residents of Wattleton Road.

"We wanted to offer an extra service that wasn't there before, for elderly people who don't have cars and would like to use a bus, should there be a service."

He said they would stop anywhere along the road where people hailed the bus but it had not been a success and the service would be removed.
