POLICE and Chiltern District Council have donated £6,000 to a crime-busting project which helps young people steer clear of crime.

The donation has been given to the High Wycombe Skidz project which helps youths to get out of crime and learn skills to get them into employment.

Thames Valley Police and the district council are keen to help the project, which offers young people a positive alternative to crime, particularly car crime.

Courses offered by the project include motorcycle and car mechanics at NVQ levels one and two.

There are also courses on quad-bike riding, moto-cross riding and information technology.

PC Jim Clarke, who is involved in the scheme, said: "Skidz has done some brilliant work in the past with young people.

"The project has given them a focus in life and improved self-esteem and educational achievement."

The initiative to sponsor young people through the Skidz project forms part of the force's "Just A Minute" campaign to cut car crime across the Thames Valley.

The donation by Chiltern District Council and Thames Valley Police will enable at least 30 extra young people to take part in the scheme out of an estimated total of 600 this year.
