ARMIES of RSPCA volunteers are taking to the streets for a massive fundraising exercise.

RSPCA Week began yesterday and aims to raise awareness of animal cruelty.

Throughout the week, all 187 branches in England and Wales, including branches in Buckinghamshire, will be aiming to raise more cash towards the cost of the animal welfare work they carry out.

Last year, more than £250,000 was raised and the RSPCA is hoping for even more this year.

John Hancock, regional manager of the RSPCA, said: "RSPCA Week is a wonderful opportunity for the public to show their appreciation of the animal welfare work carried out by volunteers, day in, day out."

He added: "The society is hopeful that last year's fundraising will be surpassed."

Branches of the RSPCA are responsible for raising money towards the cost of veterinary care in branch clinics as well as local animal welfare initiatives.

The RSPCA fights to expose organised animal cruelty, like dog-fighting, employing inspectors to uncover cruelty.

It also has an education team, reaching more than 500,000 schoolchildren every year.
