ROCK climbing, sailing and a successful youth football team were among activities celebrated at an open evening.

MP David Lidington joined parents at the event in Princes Risborough Youth Centre, Hawthorn Road, at which activities were demonstrated and certificates awarded for the work of young people and youth leaders.

Mr Lidington, whose constituency includes Princes Risborough, said he was impressed at the centre's work.

"I think what we've got here is a lot of young people in Risborough getting involved and being part of our community," he said.

Youth centre members, led by Gemma Roberts, 15, gave a presentation about the activities and achievements during the year.

Gemma said of the youth centre: "At first, it was just something to do but then I got involved in different things.

"It's been really fun. From doing this, it's going to go on my record of achievement so it's good for my future."

There were awards for work in activities which included art design, rock climbing, sailing, basketball and football.

Football coach Nick Eacott received an award for all the work he has put in over a ten-year period.

The under 18s football team reached the final of the South Bucks League last year.

Youth centre member Leanne Filles said: "We are one of the best youth centre football sides in the country."

Simon Stollett gave a talk on how youth members had designed the artwork featured on the walls of the centre.

They chose designs ranging from singer Marilyn Manson to mobile phones.

Kirsty Pocock also talked about rock-climbing while other youth members told the audience about the work of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

The evening was rounded off with food and drink, prepared by some of the many volunteers who were identified by youth leaders as being integral to the work of the centre.
