WORRIED resident Terry Crabb said the county council should prevent vehicles speeding down his road, rather than just stopping them skidding.

Mr Crabb's comments come after Buckinghamshire County Council announced a £10,000 grant for improvements to Blind Lane, in Bourne End, which includes a skid resistant surface.

Mr Crabb said: "We have been pressing for action in Blind Lane for five or so years warning that the high speed of the traffic will continue to cause accidents.

"There are numerous initiatives in many other counties. The difference appears to be that Buckinghamshire County Council is indifferent to sensible traffic management schemes."

The road appears on the council's Local Transport Plan which states that the money for improvements has been allocated in its budget for 2000/2001. The skid resistant surfacing will take up the main bulk of the £10,000 and the rest of the grant will be spent on additional signs and lines.

Mr Crabb said: "We want to see positive action to reduce the speed of the continually increasing volume of traffic."

A spokesman for the county council said: "There is an accident rate there of seven accidents up to October last year. They were all very slight but there is concern nevertheless. Hopefully these measures will improve the situation."
