OLYMPIC rowers Sir Steven Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent swapped oars for golf clubs to help raise money for charity.

The record-breaking pair helped raise £3,000 for Childline by taking part in the Tom O'Connor Classic Golf Tournament.

The tournament, organised by Mercedes Benz dealer Hughes of Beaconsfield, was hosted by the television comic and quiz-show host and 50 customers of Hughes donated £50 each to Childline in return for the chance to play. They then topped up the fund by taking part in a charity auction at the event in Denham on May 3.

Sir Steven, who plays off a 16 handicap, showed his competitive streak by winning a longest drive competition with a 260-yard effort.

Tom O'Connor told guests that the money raised was going to the London and South-East Appeal of Childline.

"Your generous donations will help Childline to open extra telephone lines and recruit more, vitally needed counsellors who will be able to offer children and young people in this area the comfort, support and advice that so many desperately need."
