PARENTS, former pupils and school children are getting a unique chance to honour people who are shaping young lives.
The Teaching Awards, an independent charity, is kicking off its annual nomination period this year with the UK's first ever Nominate a Teacher Day on Monday.
The aim of the nominations, which are open to fellow staff as well, is to publicly acknowledge teachers who are making a distinctive contribution in the classroom.
Nomination Day is being launched by Cold Feet hunk James Nesbitt who has a special regard for the teaching awards and presented one at last year's national ceremony.
He said: "Having teachers as parents I've seen the time, effort and pride that goes into the profession. It's a vocation that shapes the country's future and it doesn't receive a fitting recognition.
"Hopefully, this year we can raise the awareness of the awards and receive a record number of nominations from a wider community."
Local ceremonies will take place across the country in addition to the a national event, where hundreds of thousands of pounds in cash and equipment will go to regional winners and special commendees.
