A PART of Cookham became an alcohol-free zone following Home Office approval for a new council by-law stopping people drinking alcohol in designated outdoor areas.
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead officially introduced the ban in Station Parade last Tuesday following complaints from members of the public and extensive consultation with the community.
Cllr Ron Mison (Con, Sunninghill), chairman of the licensing, registration and protection panel at the Royal Borough, said there had been overwhelming support for the council's firm stand against the consumption of alcohol in areas where families do their shopping.
He said: "Cookham residents have told us loud and clear that they don't want to be harassed by people drinking on our streets.
"It discourages shoppers and visitors, with damaging effects on local businesses."
