CARING pupils have raised money for a sports club for children with learning difficulties.

The students from John Hampden Grammar School, Marlow Hill, High Wycombe, donated £110 to Horizon Sports Club on Wednesday.

The boys raised the money by organising discos, making Christmas cards and designing a board game. The idea was part of their Young Enterprise initiative, a project for young people who have to start up a business for a year.

The Horizon Sports Club, which is based at Wycombe Sports Centre at Marlow Hill, High Wycombe, and The Bucks Indoor Tennis Centre in Cressex, relies only on fees, donations and fundraising as they have yet to become a registered charity.

David Bradshaw, 17, a member of the Young Enterprise company at the school said the money would be a great help to the club.

He said: "I have been working as a voluntary assistant for two years and it is a really great cause. We help the children play sport who don't have the opportunity.

"They were very grateful because they are about to become a charity. It can be hard to find the money.

Anita Templar, chairman of the Horizon Sports Club, said she was delighted with the funds and was pleased the boys had taken the time to help them.

She said: "We have been working with the sixth formers from John Hampden Grammar School, and they have been working on a one to one with the children for three years."

She added: "The students are invaluable. The children will benefit tremendously, and we thank them on behalf of the children."

The club is for children aged between five and 11 years old from mainstream and special schools. They cover four sports at the centre, athletics, swimming, gymnastics and tennis.
