A FAMILY garden, built to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Mothers' Union, has hosted two fundraising events to raise cash for poverty stricken African children.

Family and friends of the union gathered at the grounds of Hughenden Church, Hughenden Park, on July 1, to celebrate the grand opening of the garden.

Two days later, it was filled with toddlers and their parents for a tiny tot picnic that raised £115 for overseas funds.

Friends and family of the Mothers' Union members were joined by the Mothers' Union Diocesan president, Felicity Randall, for the opening celebrations.

Organisers were delighted with the turnout which included the union's oldest serving member, 89-year-old Florrie Cornwall, and the youngest member, 40-year-old Barbara Wilson, who were presented with bouquets of flowers.

Joan Steel, union president, said: "It is really a garden of remembrance for members of the union and everyone in the community where they can come and remember loved ones they have lost.

"It's a place of peace and rest particularly for those who visit the church."

Mrs Randall cut the tape and then an anniversary cake, specially made by union members for the big day.

She then planted a rose tree called Mothers Day among the shrubbery in the garden.

In her speech she thanked Margaret Jaycock, a rather creative union member who made a banner stand and beautiful carved commemorative plaque.

Mothers' Union will hold their next meeting on September 4, when speaker Mary Kent will talk about 'Living with Mental Illness in the Family and the Community'.
