VOLUNTEERS are being sought by Buckinghamshire County Council to decide appeals about which schools children should attend.

The county council said the volunteers' roles would be to listen to the arguments and decide whether the right decision has been made about the most appropriate school for a child or if a change of heart is needed, after their 11-plus exam.

County council cabinet member for schools Mike Appleyard said: "Getting the right decision about which school is the most appropriate for a child can be crucial to their whole lives.

He added: "It's something that the council, schools and parents all want to get right.

"Inevitably there are differing views sometimes and some parents ask for an appeals panel to look at the whole picture and decide what action is best."

Volunteers to join panels are needed from all walks of life. They need to have good judgement, an impartial approach and an ability to balance issues presented.

They must be prepared to undertake training and be available for several consecutive days at a time, particularly in the summer when many appeals are heard.

Cases vary and could involve disputes involving pupils who have not been given places at the primary or secondary school of their choice.
