A STUDENT who sold drugs after being crippled by debts narrowly escaped a prison sentence, a court heard.

Lee Hyde, 21, a student at Bucks Chilterns University College appeared before Aylesbury Crown Court last Friday, after drugs were found in his room at the university campus in Chalfont St Giles.

His room was inspected by the accommodation manager after complaints of loud music on October 26, and a tin containing nine pieces of cannabis resin, seven of which had been kept in clingfilm, were found.

Police were alerted and as well as the drugs, they also seized a list of names and cash amounts and when Hyde was arrested, he immediately confessed he had cut up the cannabis to sell and that he had earlier supplied five pieces of cannabis to three associates.

Hyde, who pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis resin with intent to supply at an earlier hearing, was given a 240 hour community service order the maximum length order allowed.

Richard Sothcott, prosecuting, said Hyde got involved with drugs through "severe financial difficulties".

He added that during his first year at the university another student who had been selling drugs had suggested he could do the same.

Amanda Millmore, defending, said Hyde was still in considerable debt which he was trying to ease by doing part-time work.

Hyde was ordered to pay prosecution costs of £209.
