A BRIGHTLY painted carousel, rocket rides, swings and a firework finale all ensured a good weekend at Carters Steam Fair.

Hundreds of people flocked to enjoy the fun of the fair in West Wycombe on Saturday and Sunday.

And as darkness fell, villagers and fairground goers lined the High Street and poured into surrounding fields to watch a firework display organised by the fair.

But revellers were treated to a second colossal display just minutes after the first one ended when fireworks and laser lights began shooting up from the nearby West Wycombe Estate, owned by Sir Edward Dashwood, to celebrate a wedding taking place on the estate.

Ross Clements, 23, of Holtspur Close, Beaconsfield, was at Carters Steam Fair with friends and said the displays were superb.

He added: "It was excellent whoever organised the second lot of fireworks must have spent a bomb. We come down to the fair every year and they always put on fireworks but this year it was a real treat."

The world famous steam fair visits West Wycombe every year and always attracts big crowds with its Victorian steam-powered rides, some dating back to 1895, traditional stalls and period slot machines.

It is a family business handed down through generations and it is believed the Carter family once turned down an offer from pop legend Michael Jackson who wanted to buy it.

Anna Carter, who recently took over the running of the fair with her sons after the death of her husband, said: "It all went very well. We love coming to West Wycombe the people are so friendly."
