I AM writing as I was reading the write-ups on the shooting of pheasants a few weeks ago. I must admit, having mentioned it to quite a few people who also agreed, it's no sport.

I can't see what on earth these people get from it apart from a good meal and I can't see how they can feel victory at shooting a bird that has never had the chance to run.

Where is the expertise of the shooter? They just stand there with guns while the beaters (paid to do it I may add) beat the poor defenceless birds out of the undergrowth to be shot!

The shooters have no skills and basically I feel it is a cruel and totally wasteful pastime and I guess it's the meeting in the pub afterwards to count how many were shot that's the attraction. It should not be allowed - it should be looked into.

But then although I am totally against the shooting of pheasants I also have a very concerning reason. Myself and 20 or so other people have to suffer the continuing din of guns going off at, I may say, upsetting hours and days.

While you are out walking the dog she suddenly bolts to the nearest road on hearing the guns go off.

Many, especially border collies, have developed phobias due to gunfire. Over the last two years my dog has cost over £500 due to a phobia caused by gunfire.

It can send her into fitting as she is epileptic.

I don't find it very amusing, especially the agony it causes the dog and she can still hear it even indoors.

I know of two others who live in fear of it. There are probably hundreds in the area.

Shooters should pay our vets' and analysts' bills.
