BATCHES of chilli powder have had to be recalled after pesticides above the maximum recommended level were found in them.

The Food Standards Agency issued the warning that select batches of TRS Chilli Powder Extra Hot had been found to exceed the maximum residue level of Ethion pesticide.

Ethion is used widely on food and does not normally pose any health risks.

But prolonged exposure to higher levels could lead to flu-like symptoms.

The products affected are packed in 400g bags with the batch codes, L028 Best Before End January 2002 and L0132 Best Before End May 2002.

The batch codes can be found on the rear of the package beneath the bar code.

A risk assessment was carried out by the Pesticides Safety directorate, an executive agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. The investigation concluded that the products do not present an unacceptable risk to consumers but retailers have been asked to remove the product from sale.

Customers are entitled to a full refund if they return the chilli powder to the outlet where it was bought.

If the products are found, please contact Andrew Collinson at Wycombe District Council on (01494) 421710.
