EYEWITNESSES have told of the terrifying moment when a lorry came down a hill and careered into a High Wycombe estate agents, killing two women.

The lorry, loaded with bricks, is thought to have lost control as it came down the hill. Police say its brakes may have failed, causing it to smash into several cars in Crendon Street before it crashed through the front window of Aitchisons Estate Agents at 2.50pm last Thursday, killing Maggie Doel and Sally Jamieson.

Shaken survivor Royston Davis tried to save his colleague's life after being inches away from death himself when the lorry came through the window of the estate agents. Partner at Aitchisons, Mr Davis, 39, miraculously escaped.

He said: "All I could see was the lorry coming past and I knew Maggie and the lady were at the back of the shop but there was nothing I could do. The next minute they were gone."

Eyewitness Ritchie Carroll, from Gerrards Cross, was just yards away when the accident happened.

He added: "I just saw a van spin round the corner and heard the man driving the lorry beeping his horn. I have never seen anything like it. People were screaming but I don't even remember where it was coming from."

Four injured people were taken to Wycombe Hospital including the lorry driver who suffered a head wound and had to be pulled from the wreckage.

The 37-year-old lorry driver was arrested after the crash but was released on police bail.

Police say there will be months of investigation into the incident and any witnesses should call PC Gerry Byrne at High Wycombe Police Station on 01494 465888.
