IT was indeed interesting to read the UK Independence Party's conclusion that the Conservative Party is wholly responsible for the UK's full entry into the European Union.
Over the past 100 years, other than for 22 years including the war years, Conservative governments have retained power and are mostly responsible for signing almost all of the European documents.
When the great Winston Churchill became involved in meetings in occupied Europe towards the end of the last war followed by his great Zurich Speech of 1945 advocating European Unity, the die was cast.
To consider any state in the world as totally independent (except the USA) has been overtaken by historical events. Note: I always thought that the UK had an independent nuclear deterrent. Now I find that the USA only has the control of missile launch procedures.
If Labour wins the general election, the UK will have regional assemblies throughout the UK alongside the Scottish, Welsh and Irish assemblies, and will possibly do away with several tiers of local government. Ghost regional assemblies are already in operation. We shall have to wait and see whether or not this will provide a more efficient platform for public services than now.
It seems that English hostility towards any foreigner is unreal. Tens of thousands of UK citizens have bought homes throughout southern Europe and happily reside in perfect harmony with all races. (Calpe, Alicante, Spain Badminton Club with a large proportion of members from south Bucks has such an international mix that they can now play inter-club members international pairings).
Europe as a contingent is now leading the way forward within the global village and whatever the result of elections throughout the community, in my judgement it will prosper in a stable and reasonably secure manner. Keep the debate going, and remember: "From the fires of heated debate the sparks of liberty fly off!"
