Re: Money not wasted on speed traps

WHAT nonsense! Speed traps catch only a few motorists.

The number of speeders is posted on lamp posts, somewhat akin to drawings of the number of planes shot down by a pilot during air battles. Does this deter drivers from speeding? I dont think so.

It may make the police feel that they are doing good but have you ever driven towards a speed trap? Drivers travelling in the opposite direction warn of the impending danger causing one to slow down.

We see regular speed traps at a nearby junction, on a 30 mph stretch of road, but in the absence of these, vehicles are driven at appalling speeds.

The comment regarding the cost of a camera is also a non-starter. Of course it has to be paid for, but how can you equate this cost against the cost of professional people attending an accident, to recover wreckage, recover injured, or, God forbid, worse, and the appalling personal toll on the injured persons, or bereaved, families and friends.

It is no use limiting budgets to a local department the overall scenario must be encompassed.

I believe that the only way is to prevent speeding, not just by trying to encourage drivers to slow down, especially in 30mph built-up areas.

Try installing speed humps, similar to those on Long Furlong Drive in Slough. Driving at 30mph is reasonably comfortable, but I would not like to drive along at 40mph!

The prevention of speeding would enable the police to do more important work like checking for dangerous vehicles, i.e. those with faulty lights and tyres, etc.

When did you last check your vehicle?

This is not too much of a problem on well-lit roads in good conditions, but it is different on unlit roads in poor visibility, and for other road users with less than perfect eyesight. I wonder how many accidents have been the result of faulty headlights?
