VOLUNTEERS gave up their weekend to help restore a stockade at the Holtspur Bank nature reserve.

Around a dozen members of the Friends of Holtspur Bank joined in the work party last Sunday and raised the level of the stockade by a foot.

The stockade is used to keep deer out of the nature reserve which boasts a wide range of species of butterflies and a selection of dormice, which are becoming an increasingly endangered species.

Shirley Scrivener, chairman of the Friends of Holtspur Bank, said: "The day went very well indeed.

"Around a dozen volunteers showed up including our three teenage members."

Holtspur Bank has been a nature reserve for six years and members of the public can join for just £2 per household, per year.

Membership includes a regular newsletter and information on the activities organised by the group.
