AMERSHAM Community Association will celebrate its rise from humble beginnings to a vibrant recreational centre with its 50th Anniversary Exhibition party.

The centre, which was hailed as 'one of the most attractive community centres in the country' when it had its official opening in June 1956, will host displays from many of its 50 affiliated organisations.

The Amersham and District Association was formed in 1951 but it took five years for its members to achieve their ambition of having their own premises converted farm buildings at Woodside Farm, Chiltern Avenue.

The association has come along way since the New Years Eve Ball in 1953, its first fundraising event, by following its aim to 'foster a community spirit.'

Association secretary Peter Lawson said: "By 1955 the premises were in use and new committees were formed to raise funds, warden the site and provide refreshments."

By 1970 more than 57 affiliated societies meant new buildings were needed and a new centre building, Drake Hall, was officially opened by MP Ronald Bell.

Organisations including the Photographic Society, Youth Clubs and the Short Mat Bowls Club now meet at the centre in Chiltern Avenue, Amersham.

All are welcome to the fun and festivities at Drake Hall, Chiltern Avenue, on July 15 between 11am and 4pm.
