THE USA claimed their fifth lacrosse World Cup title in six attempts at Adams Park on Saturday beating Australia 14-8 to lift the trophy.

The Americans, led by captain and player of the match Cherie Greer, put in an impressive second half performance to destroy any Aussie hopes of taking the title for the first time since they last won it in 1986.

Then, they beat the Americans on their own territory, but on Saturday the USA proved they are the dominant force in the game with a win in front of a disappointingly low crowd of 1,113.

England, who had high hopes of reaching the final themselves, had to settle for bronze after beating Canada 9-4 in the third and fourth place play-off.

They missed out on a final place after losing out 8-2 to Australia in Thursday's semi-final. The USA eased through to the final with a 25-2 semi-final win over Canada.
