CHESHAM are through to the final of the Berks and Bucks Cup after a comprehensive 6-2 win over Dr Martens League side Burnham on Tuesday evening.

The Generals looked a cut above their visitors as they enjoyed the lion's share of possession in teeming rain on a muddy Meadow pitch.

Boss Bob Dowie missed the rout because he was away on business and assistant Pete Lawrence took charge. Afterwards he admitted he was delighted with the result.

He said: "You've got to be pleased with six goals. I was pleased to see that we played attractive football in terrible conditions."

Chesham seemed to have all the attacking options against their lower-league opponents, but to Burnham's credit they put up some intelligent defence to deny the Generals until the 25th minute.

Burnham keeper David Smalley had to turn the lively Kelechi Duru's effort around the post before making an excellent save with his feet after the ball had fallen kindly to give striker Mark Watson a chance at the near post.

But Chesham got off the mark on 25 minutes when captain Brian Statham had an easy spotkick to convert to make it 1-0, after Burnham's Jamie Furmage had upended the Duru as he threatened the visitors goal.

Statham fired high and to the right to give Smalley no chance.

Just six minutes later Chesham were two up when Derek Brown's blast from the edge of the area took a massive deflection off Terry Bowes to wrong-foot Smalley.

By now Chesham were stringing together long periods of good passing play and it only seemed a matter of time before they added another.

It came when Bowes got on the end of a cross to finish from close range to make it 3-0 at the break.

Burnham came out for the second half in determined mood, but the wind was quickly taken out of their sails when Chesham made it 4-0 after just two minutes when James Pinnock came flying in at the near post to head home Bowes' corner.

Statham was unlucky not to make it five when he spotted the keeper off his line and delivered an intelligent lob which beat the back-pedallling keeper, only to agonisingly hit the crossbar before Bowes' follow-up was saved.

Burnham pulled one back following a rare foray into the Chesham half, which caught the home side out, as Micky Durkin lobbed keeper Gary Phillips from a distance on 65 minutes.

Chesham did well to survive another Burnham attack before racing up the other end to make it 5-1 thanks to Duru's clinical finishing.

With six minutes remaining, Burnham's Michael Bartley made it 5-2 after his strike was deflected past Phillips, but Chesham hadn't finished yet.

They added another at the death when Bowes' curling freekick was headed in from point blank range by the hovering Watson.
