IT'S a dog's life but at least pub mutts Ceasar and Ruby can spend theirs together in wedded bliss.

Regulars and their hounds flocked to The Black Lion pub, Woodlands Drive, Naphill, on Sunday to see Ruby the bitch get hitched to her one-year-old toyboy.

The dobermans, owned by publicans John and Julie Newman, took centre stage in the pub's beer garden to exchange vows before being whisked away in a vintage car, complete with dangling dog food tins, to a mystery honeymoon destination.

The barking mad ceremony was performed by former bank manager Jan Pearce. Pronouncing the couple "dog and wife", he told slobbering Ceasar, who wore a gold neck sash: "You may now sniffle the bride."

Jan had an audience of about 100 punters in stitches as he read from his unique order of service headed 'Canine Nuptials'.

Ruby, aged two, arrived at the pub just before 4pm and stepped from the back of a 1957 MG Magnette led by landlady Julie.

Wearing a white feather boa, Ruby made her entrance in traditional style to the tune of the Wedding March. It all ran like clockwork until Jan read: "If any dog can show any just cause why they should not marry, speak now or forever hold their tongue." In reply, one loud-mouthed mutt let out a mighty bark. But Jan dismissed the yelp as "a case of mistaken identity" and the service moved on.
