PIONEER Sandra Webb has been awarded for her work setting up a group for those who suffer from a life-threatening skin condition.

Mother-of-two Sandra, received the Gold Standard in the Arts and Community Category of the Windrush 2001 Achievement Awards.

The award ceremony, held on June 21 at the Dorchester Hotel, in London, celebrated the outstanding contribution of African Caribbeans and Asians.

Mrs Webb, of Strawberry Close, Prestwood, said: "I was amazed to get a pioneer award for blazing the trail with my work.

"I thought I may get something as a newcomer but I was absolutely thrilled to get this award."

Determined Mrs Webb set up the Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP) Support Group three years ago to help those with a skin condition that means they can develop cancer just by going into normal daylight.

Her seven-year-old son, Alex, suffers from the condition and she has even set up the first ever night-time camp in Britain for those with XP.

The idea is to bring families together from all over the world and provide a safe protected environment where children can play.

It will offer rooms made safe with special UV protective films on the windows and give families the chance to relax.

The camp will be held at St Katherine's, a former convent, in Frieth, between February 8 and February 11.
