SPARKLING teeth will be at the forefront of everyone's minds during National Smile Week.

Schools, dentists, youth groups and health specialists across the country are making sure that all ages are being told about the importance of caring for their teeth in a bid to stamp out oral health problems.

The 23rd National Smile Week begins on May 14, and it is hoped that this year's campaign, organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, will be bigger and brighter than ever.

Discussions are now under way with top international sports celebrities who will launch the week following in the footsteps of TV celebrity vet Trude Mostue who supported last year's campaign, after it emerged she had battled with a dental phobia.

The BDHF is striving to educate people about oral cancers, dental phobia and the dangers of sporting injuries under the banner of 'Show Your Teeth You Care'.

One of the many dental practices around Buckinghamshire taking part is Flackwell Heath Dental Care Practice, in Straight Bit, Flackwell Heath.

Chief dental hygienist Wendy Beech is delighted with the response from children for the colouring competition they put together at their practice.

She said: "We have covered a whole notice board with colourful posters and leaflets sent to us from the BDHF and kids can win an electric toothbrush if they enter our competition which is themed on sport."

She added: "It's important that people are aware that it only takes a few vital steps to look after their teeth and these steps could save them a lot of worry in the future."

By heeding three vital messages, young and old alike can join in the battle against oral disease.
