THE Star is launching another one of its popular appeals, to help a school raise cash for a swimming pool for disabled pupils.

Maplewood School needs to raise £500,000 for a hydrotherapy pool at its site in Downley, High Wycombe.

The school, which had launched its own appeal, asked the Star for help after only managing to raise £20,000 after a year of fundraising.

The school is now asking Star readers to get behind our appeal to help parents and staff at the school raise the huge amount of cash needed in time for when students move in next year.

Pupils at the school have both sensory and physical disabilities, as well as learning difficulties, and a hydrotherapy pool is essential for their physiotherapy programmes.

For some children, floating or swimming is the only movement they are likely to experience.

One way readers can help the school is by stepping into tuxedos to attend the school's Black Tie Ball.

The guest of honour at the event will be TV celebrity Lorraine Kelly, who lives in Cookham, who has become patron of the charity.

She said: "The pool is so important for these children because some can't move around but when they get in that pool they get freedom."

The ball takes place on May 12, and tickets cost £50, which includes a three-course meal.

There will also be a mini casino, henna body art, raffles with some prizes donated by celebrities, live band and loads more.

For tickets call (01628) 521115 or Hazel Howe on (01494) 875021.

To make a donation send a cheque made payable to Maplewood Pool Fund to Kelly Clayton, The Star, Gomm Road, High Wycombe, Bucks HP13 7DW.
