WITH my leaving councillor activities behind me, I thought there would never be a need to write letters to the press any more.

However, I do ask you to find a small space for this letter. There appears to be a rumour circulating in some parts of Flackwell Heath that the proposal for further traffic calming will give rise to road problems in the village.

Therefore, some are saying it should not go ahead until other roads have been considered as part of the scheme.

It appears to me that these remarks have been put about on the basis of what is a lack of knowledge of the scheme. Those making the suggestions should wait until they see exactly what is to be put in place.

The major calming is suggested for the length of both ends of the village, ie Heath End Road and the straight easterly end of Straight Bit with only small changes to the middle of the village, one near the Rec, the other near Sheepridge.

How such works could cause rat running in the other roads talked about by the rumour-mongers is difficult to see.

If this planned calming is delayed because of ill-informed comment, it is likely that the village will lose it, with the money going into other parts of the county road network.

This could mean a considerable delay before the area would see any further traffic-calming controls being brought forward.

Let me make it clear. If the delay takes place, the people of the village should understand why and who is responsible. It will not be the county council nor the county councillors.
