FIERCE Anne Robinson proved she was the softest link when she helped out at a church May Fair.

The former Points of View star has become famed for her harshness towards contestants on her BBC quiz show, spitting out the phrase 'You are the Weakest Link, goodbye'.

Midweek uncovered a good deed the Weakest Link host probably wanted forgotten when we talked to Father Willie Strain of St Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, High Wycombe.

A bizarre chain of events led to the TV star helping out at the church's May Fair, exactly ten years ago.

Father Strain heard Anne on a radio show saying that every Sunday should be Mothering Sunday and he used her words in one of his services.

By a twist of fate a relative of Anne's researcher was sitting in the congregation and news of the sermon got back to Anne, who spoke about it on her next radio show.

Father Strain heard this and asked the star to help out at the May Fair on Holywell Mead, on The Rye, which was fundraising for the Catholic community. She agreed.

He said: "She wasn't anything like she is on that show. She was a darling. She came to the fair and did the raffle and and wasn't scary at all.

"She hasn't invited me on her show yet, but I wouldn't like to go on it anyway."

Anne told Midweek after the fair that she helped out a few stall holders. She said: "I have said to Father Strain he should mention Madonna in his sermon and she'll come to the May Fair then."
