A TEENAGER got stuck on a fairground ride with ten other people when workers were unable to release a safety bar.

Police say the 15-year-old's "wide girth" jammed the restraining bar on the Miami Surfer ride at Beaconsfield Charter Fair on Thursday night.

Crowds gathered to watch as the youngster struggled to free himself after Beaconsfield firefighters found they were unable to cut the bar.

Instead the fairground workers stepped in, so everyone could escape.

A spokesman for T Smiths fair said: "A big deal was made out of nothing.

"He was freed from the ride when my brother unbolted the bar and went off without any injuries, he was just a bit overweight that's all."

The teenager was taken by ambulance to Wycombe Hospital but did not suffer any serious injuries.

The Health and Safety Executive is now looking into the 30-minute incident at the fair in Aylesbury End, Beaconsfield Old Town.

PC Terry Sangwin, based at Beaconsfield, said: "It was not as desperate as it actually sounded, initially it sounded horrific.

"The person who was trapped came off the ride a bit agitated. Originally someone had called up the emergency services and told fire officers 'did you know this ride has collapsed and all these people are on it' and they ended up hooting and screeching to the scene."

An onlooker said: "No one really knew what was happening.

"It turned out to be these people trapped on the ride but when they were released people were cheering and clapping. It was all a bit strange really."

Firefighters, police and ambulance were called to the scene at 7.30pm after getting an emergency call.

Buckinghamshire Fire Service declined to comment on its part in the whole scenario and had been directed not to speak to the press.

Kate Spark, spokesman for Thames Valley Police, said: "The man was released and taken to Wycombe General Hospital with bruises."
