A PROJECT to build a bronze statue of Sir Steve Redgrave was given a boost after Wycombe District Council gave permission for it to be placed in Marlow's Higginson Park.

The statue will be placed outside the conservatory at the back of Court Garden, a few feet down from the footpath towards the river.

It is just a stone's throw from where Sir Steve first stepped into a rowing boat at Marlow Rowing Club.

Hugh McNearnie, chairman of the Marlow Redgrave Appeal, said this was a milestone for the project.

He added: "We are naturally very pleased with this decision. This is an important step towards the town gaining a permanent tribute to Sir Steve to mark his unique achievement in a fitting and appropriate way."

The group has already raised an impressive £50,000, halfway towards the target, since the official launch two weeks ago by Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, Sir Nigel Mobbs.

The money will be used to pay for the statue and for funding future rowing talent in Marlow in memory of Sir Steve's feats.

Neale Andrew, the chosen sculptor, has been in contact with Sir Steve to arrange the first of what will be four sittings.

Mr Andrew produced the winning statue of Sir Steve holding an oar in his right hand and his left hand raised in a victorious salute.

He said: "The idea behind it is that it harks back to the Olympians of classical times from the first ever Olympic games."

Sir Steve has given the statue the thumbs up, despite breaking the thumb off the miniature 'dummy' statue by accident.
