MR Chris Huhne (letters, July 6) draws attention to a survey indicating that the British know less about the EU than the inhabitants of any other member state; he believes that Eurosceptics have taken advantage of this ignorance to spread myths and to tell lies.

As one who has never needed to say anything about the EU that was not the truth, I would suggest Mr Huhne should be profoundly grateful for such lack of awareness as exists.

My own experience shows that there are only two main groups of people in favour of the EU: those whom it benefits directly and those with little knowledge of it.

The more people become aware of how uniquely damaging the EU is to Britain's interests, the more the majority come to oppose our continued membership.

Many UKIP members were apolitical until the horror they experienced on learning, from whatever source, of the true nature of the EU prompted them to join.

We therefore welcome Mr Huhne's campaign call, for if he seeks to tell people what the EU is really like, it can only increase the groundswell of those who think we should leave.

He could start by ceasing to style himself MEP for the county of whichever local newspaper he happens to be writing to.

Like me, he is one of just eleven MEPs who must somehow 'represent' six million voters in the eight counties that make up the EU's vast administrative area of southeast England.
