LIBERAL Democrat MEP Christopher Huhne has certainly created an impressive list of the benefits we might gain by joining the euro (Letters, July 6).

But on close inspection, I find that one important item is missing.

Does Mr Huhne recall the headline "home loans costs could be slashed, claims MEP"?

That appeared in the BFP Property Section on July 21st, last year.

The following week, I challenged Mr Huhne to "produce a single valid argument to support his claim that home buyers will benefit if Britain adopts the euro".

And I promised that if he could even half convince me, I would pay the equivalent of 100 euros to a charity of his choice.

Well, he never came back, and the 100 euros are still waiting to be claimed. True, they have since lost another ten percent of their value against the dollar, although only about three percent against our notorious "strong pound".

Interestingly, when Mr Huhne is not popping up as the MEP for Buckinghamshire (or maybe Oxfordshire, or even the defunct Berkshire), he serves as a spokesman for the pro-EU lobby group Britain in Europe. In which capacity, he recently made another blatantly false claim that the euro has already created 5.4 million new jobs.

As Britain in Europe is partly funded by the European Movement, which in turn receives taxpayers' money from the European Commission, please could Mr Huhne clarify. When is he acting as our representative, and when is he speaking for the EU?
