NATIONAL test results for 14-year-olds at Hatters Lane School in High Wycombe are twice as good as they were a year ago.

Children are tested in English, maths and science and at 14 (Key Stage Three) are expected to reach Level Five.

At Hatters Lane last year 31 per cent of the children reached level five in English; this year it was 51 per cent. In maths last year, the figure was 23 per cent and this year 50 per cent. And in science last year it was 22 per cent and this year 49 per cent.

The school's improvement plan set out targets for each subject this year and the children passed the target in English and hit it in maths and science.

The results are still below national average, but headteacher Tina Barnes is delighted with the improvement.

"There is some way to go but it shows what can be done with good staff in one year.

"The staff have worked their socks off. We felt the kids had improved, but it was only when we got the figures that we could be sure."
