ONE of Buckinghamshire's most attractive towns could be made even more picturesque if £150,000 worth of proposals are given the go-ahead.

Plans are afoot to upgrade Beaconsfield's street surfaces and furniture, particularly on the four corners of the town's main roundabout which could be landscaped.

Other proposals, put forward by South Bucks District Council, include changes to the car parking system which many people feel detracts from the town's character.

Initial sketch proposals have been made and talks held with English Heritage who will be involved in the proposed changes to this important conservation area.

Discussions are planned between the Beaconsfield Old Town Residents Association (BOTRA), the Beaconsfield Society, the town council, the Beaconsfield Old Town Environmental Working Group, South Bucks District Council and Buckinghamshire County Council.

Town mayor Malcolm Dunlop said he looked forward to the improvements.

He added: "The Old Town is spoilt by a plethora of noticeboards and the whole thing could do with a facelift.

"The townspeople have been very grateful for the involvement of Bucks County Council and South Bucks District Council in this scheme."

John Gorton, President of the Beaconsfield Society, said the changes were much needed.

He added: "We are interested in any improvements which will benefit Beaconsfield town centre.

"As it stands the car parking in the Old Town is a turn-off to visitors entering what is the gateway to the town."
