MULTIPLE Sclerosis sufferer Spencer Arnott is furious after getting a fine for displaying a disabled car parking permit the wrong way round.

The 56-year-old had just finished shopping with a friend on Thursday when he caught the traffic warden writing out the ticket in High Wycombe town centre.

Spencer, of Beech Tree Road, Holmer Green, pointed out that he was obviously disabled and the permit was just the wrong way round, but instead of letting him off, he said the warden showed him how to pay the £40 fine.

He said: "I asked why did I get a ticket when the badges were clearly visible and was told that one of the badges was upside down. I pointed out that I was clearly disabled and offered to show the woman the other side of the permit. Apparently it was too late and instructions for payment were on the ticket."

Spencer, who is unable to drive, was driven into town by a friend, who said he was disgusted that the fine had been issued.

Buckinghamshire County Council has now quashed the fine after Spencer wrote to them.

Spencer added: "They have let me off but by the way they have written the letter, it is like they are saying we'll let you off just this once."

A spokesman for the county council said: "We did quash the fine as we did not feel it appropriate. However, it is important that the permit is clearly displayed. In some information we sent out there is a letter explaining how the disc should be displayed.

"We have to work within European guidelines. We still need to get the message out that the parking badges need to be displayed correctly."
