A CHARTER to promote racial equality in Wycombe has been signed by community leaders.

Wycombe District Council will support the work of the Wycombe Race Equality Council (WREC) for the next three years after signing the charter.

It was signed by Alain Larch, chairman of WREC and councillor Bill Jennings, chairman of the district council on Friday, at the Wycombe Race Equality Council offices in Desborough Road, High Wycombe.

The council pledged to support the WREC with funding along with working in partnership.

Jeremy Beake, the community development manager for Wycombe District Council said in a speech before the signing: "This charter is to represent some of the wonderful work that's going on and it will continue. And it will continue to blossom in the future."

After the signing Cllr Jennings went to the Green Street Centre to see how partnerships between all sections of the community work together.

Munir Hussain, chairman of the Green Street Centre Trust, outlined how people have joined together to ensure services such as the youth service and Citizens Advice Bureau continue at the centre.

Prior to the signing Ranjit Dheer WREC director said it was good to see the council working with WREC on race issues, especially at a time of racial tensions in areas like Oldham and Burnley.
