CONCERNED villagers took a stand against phone masts and raised money to continue their fight against one being erected on a school playing field.

The CRAM members (Concerned Residents Against Masts) sold homemade cakes on Saturday and made £160 towards the on-going costs of their battle against Vodafone

The mobile phone giant wants to put a mast on the Bowstridge Lane playing fields, Chalfont St Giles, near Chalfont St Giles Middle School.

Robert Fowler, a member of the campaign group, said: "We want to make the villagers aware that just because the Vodafone mast has not gone up, it has not gone away. A sub committee consisting of CRAM members, parish councillors and Vodafone are due to meet to discuss resiting the mast, but have not agreed to an alternative site yet."

Chris Hockin, who lives in Albion Road, Chalfont St Giles, said: "It is outrageous that Vodafone intends to put a mast on our playing fields. Go for a walk and you will see children playing football, tennis and cricket. As far as I'm concerned you might as well stand them in front of a microwave with the door open if this mast goes ahead."

So far the group's petition has more than 1,500 signatures and posters have been handed out to put in house windows.

A spokesman for Vodafone said: "We are in discussion with the local community and council and will listen to views and are currently reviewing the situation in an effort to work out a solution that will be acceptable to everyone."
