CHESHAM United are set to unveil a new signing which will make the non-league world 'sit up and take notice' the BFP can reveal.

Boss Bob Dowie has been locked in talks with an England non-league midfielder at a Conference club and hopes to complete the £10,000-plus transfer this weekend.

Dowie faces competition from Conference clubs but is confident he has persuaded the player to join Ryman Premier Division Chesham instead.

Dowie said: "He's the best non-league midfielder in England. It shows the club's ambition that we're prepared to go into the transfer market and compete with Conference clubs for someone like this."

The new boy won't be signed in time for tomorrow's match at home to Hendon when Chesham are going for their third league win in a row.

Striker Dudley Campbell will keep his place after scoring one and winning a penalty in last week's impressive 2-0 win at Slough. But Dowie will make changes.

He said: "There are a couple of things we can improve. I don't want people getting too comfortable."
