MORE than 20 companies have taken part in a high-profile survey being carried out by Wycombe District Council to look at strengthening links with the business community.

The Bucks Free Press, Dun & Bradstreet, Instron Ltd and Stiefel Laboratories are among the firms which have already taken part in the in-depth survey, the first to be carried out by the council in more than five years.

Its aim is to obtain up-to-date information on local businesses so when the council contacts companies in the future it does so at the right time, in the right way and with relevant information to avoid time wasting.

"Everyone has welcomed me with open arms," said Barry Pember, economic development officer at the district council, who spoke to each company at a personal, confidential meeting.

"Filling in the survey takes about 30-45 minutes and often I was with companies for about two hours. The overall view is 'yes, let's work together to make sure we get some action'."

Mr Pember said that available evidence suggests that local authorities are currently involved in partnerships, working with a small number of businesses on a narrow range of issues, principally related to economic development.

A future priority should be to widen this to include a more representative cross-section of their business base and a broader range of activities.

Lance Slater, who is a member of both the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Marlow Chamber of Trade, said: "It shows they (the district council) are very positive to get the voice of the community and business together, but it needs to be followed up."
